Barnyard Chicks
Mar 26, 2024
Lopez-adapted straight-run (unsexed) chicks, bred from my flock of hearty, healthy, multi-breed laying hens. These ladies are fed only food scraps and soaked organic grains (no commercial feed here), so it's cost-effective to feed them. They are adapted to free-raging in the forest and field, and are excellent foragers. I've seen them catch and eat snakes!

The father rooster for this year's batch is a Lavender Ameraucana, a gentle lad. I generally bring in a new rooster breed every year for genetic variation.

These ladies won't be the most prolific layers you've ever seen, but they are hardy, adaptable, and come from great stock. My original hens are 6 years old and still laying a couple eggs a week from March-October!

The first batch of hatched chicks are all black with some white coloring, it will be interesting to see their adult plumage.

I can hatch up to 90 eggs every week. A batch will be ready approximately May 8 and May 15, and I can continue to hatch through summer if requested! These chicks will grow into roosters good for the stew pot, or laying hens that will likely start laying eggs early next Spring.

$4/each, unsexed
