This Week:The first hour profiles some summer songs, jazz waltzes and familiar tunes from “Oklahoma” -as first aired in John Pizzarelli’s “Radio Deluxe” radio show of July 6. The second hour profiles two songbirds born on July 21 who flourished in the 1950s and reached age 94, first the hit-maker Kay Starr (born Catherine Laverne Starks on an Oklahoma Indian reservation in 1922) and then the Croatian-American jazz singer Helen Merrill (born Jelena Ana Milcetic in 1930), who turned 94 yesterday. The final hour begins with a tribute to singer Janis Siegel then two more keyboard artists deserving wider attention, pianist Marian McPartland, and then part 2 (of) 3 of our review of pianist/organist/accordionist/singer Joe Mooney, featuring his quartet work in 1947.
