This Week: We begin today’s show with three versions of “Autumn Leaves” performed in the mid-1950s by Artie Shaw, Erroll Garner and the #1 hit by Roger Williams, followed by an all-Gershwin program, beginning with two 1924 Gershwin hits as played by pianist Bud Powell, born a century ago (September 27, 1924), then we’ll focus on George & Ira Gershwin’s first hit show, debuting a century ago this fall, “Lady Be Good” by playing two versions of each hit song from that show. The 4:00 hour features hit songs from the Gershwin’s 10 other Broadway shows debuting 1925 to 1933. Then, the final 5:00 hour features four songs from Porgy & Bess (1935), followed by 14 amazing songs written by the Gershwin brothers for 3 Hollywood films in the first half of 1937 in the last six months of George’s life, while struggling with a painful brain tumor before dying on July 11, 1937.
