Emergency Preparedness Planning
Aug 20, 2023
If you are interested in collaborating to ensure Lopezians have “shelter from the storm” (thank you Bobby Dylan), please send your contact information to me via email and/or text: shari4504@gmail.com or 971.235.4137.

I tried to launch this last December when we had our power outage and deep freeze, but have come to realize we will need at least one and possibly several co-leaders (I travel a lot).

My hope is that this will not be a huge time commitment. Getting organized will take some effort - and scheduling a meeting in late September or late October will be the first step - but after that it should just be a matter of (a) jumping into action in the event of an emergency, and (b) meeting once/year to discuss changes, if any, and refresh supplies.

Yes, Michael knows not only what is available on Lopez by way of fire mitigation/management/response but in all of San Juan County and also has trained quite a bit in Eastern WA(Leavenworth etc). He knows all the agencies with a role and could be a great speaker at a community event on this topic.

Thanks Kathryn. Sounds like we should check in with Michael - what a great resource! Our hope is to figure out how we as a community can support existing programs and fill any gaps in emergency response plans, particularly by organizing localized neighborhood groups to make sure no one falls through the cracks in a time of crisis.

Lopez Fire Fighter Michael Sendrowicz is very active in wildland fire prevention and response. He has been organizing learning events for landowners, in collaboration with the Fire Dept,San Juan County Conservation and the Conservation Corp. One such workshop was held on my forested property, with 25 participants. Hugely valuable. I know he is working to get ... Read All

Thank you Justin for this timely post. While there are some warning systems being worked on for tsunami and earthquakes, it seems more likely that wildfires are a more immediate threat with worsening drought conditions each year. Wildfire would be devastating to our largely forested island. I hope our community can come together, and perhaps designate our ... Read All
