We want to load a heap of gratitude on all those involved in making and putting up the signs along Ferry Road that have the names and details of some of the black folks killed in this country just in the past few years.
For once, I am so thankful for cellphones that have enabled people to film such atrocities as the nearly 9-minute, agonizing death of George Floyd.
The movement for racial justice is not new but it has gained much momentum and notice and I think we must do everything we can to keep this vibrant movement alive and visible. Especially in a place like Lopez, where the population is overwhelmingly white, it is easy to be complacent or just simply live in denial of the reality and pervasiveness of white supremacy and all its manifestations, as well as the reality of white privilege, which so many of us white folks take for granted and don't even think about.
Toward this goal, I am asking that those signs remain in place throughout the summer, if not longer. With the flowers and other items left at this row of signs, they are evocative of the love and beauty that must prevail if justice is to become more than just a word. And a reminder that each of the names on those signs were people who were loved and cherished and must not be forgotten.

I'm sorry Judy! You need to read the whole thread to get the context of what Linda and I were discussing. It was a "what if" example, a thought experiment that Linda brought up. There are so many nuances to sift through here - speaking of.... Read all

We are so lucky to have a strong community on Lopez. We can still expect equal justice under the law here, we can depend on our first responders and each other. What checks so much of what could easily escalate is that we know each other and have shared.... Read all

Yes, I totally agree with Colin about not calling names. What happened was truly upsetting for most of us who live here on this island. As I drove by, I appreciated the effort that had gone into this display, and I brought by some flowers myself.

I also want to clarify something from my previous post. In my anger immediately after the signs were vandalized, I used the term "the racists". I should have just said "people", or "someone", or even "racism". I.... Read all

Yes Linda, unfortunately, it is true.
First, a woman decided to either drive over them in her big red hummer or jeep, or pulled them out by hand. Then when people swiftly put them back she returned with her partner to spray paint over them. While.... Read all

Questions:

I have seen two mentions of people being spray painted in the face while trying to save the signs.

1) Is this true?

2) If it is true, was it the same person/persons who ran over the signs?

3) If it is true,.... Read all

Looks like the racists are already tearing down the signs, and vandalizing other BLM signs around the island, and assaulting community members who try to stop them. Kids were threatened when they tried to put the signs back up!!! Community members were.... Read all
