I have had my same local phone service through Century Link for 20 years.
Today I began receiving calls which my caller ID identifies as MY OWN NUMBER and MY OWN NAME. When I called Century Link about this, they nicely explained that my number has been "spoofed", which means another person/business has found a way to make calls showing my name and number. They said there is nothing they can do about it, since the problem is not that my line has been hacked.
They sent me a very informative email explaining all the things I can do if this is happening. I can pay for a service that will block a certain number or I can change my phone number.
I do have a cell phone but do not have good cell coverage where I live down here off Burt Road near Davis Bay. So I can't rely only on a cell phone.
I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions. I don't want to change the number I have had for 20 years and I don't want to have to pay for my own name and phone number to be blocked on my own phone.
I am assuming that whoever is doing this is also calling other people who could be "tricked" into answering the call because they think it's me. Century Link said that's why they do it.
Any help is appreciated! PLEASE EMAIL me with any comments, suggestions, etc.

Thanks for all the responses. Seems that this is a fairly common issue, as well as the 468 numbers that are not really locals. That's been happening for several months and like everyone else here, I'm only answering the phone if I know the number and name. If it's a legit phone call, they will leave a message.
Re: the VOIP option: I wish I could do that. Problem is, Rock Island and Century Link have been trying for months to get a faster internet link for me but it seems our cabin is located in just the spot where we can't get broadband and there is no way to get faster internet. Thus, no VOIP option. Folks from both Rock Island and Century Link have actually come out here to try to fix the problem but it's just all the trees and hills keep me from getting a good signal. And I love the trees and hills way more than fast internet ... and so, it is what it is and while standing out in my yard yesterday listening and watching all the birds, I remembered my priorities. And so I'm over the whole fast internet and unwanted phone calls thing and know that I am blessed to be right here where I am.

Jackie, I no longer answer my phone because I have been spoofed so many times. If it's a legitimate caller, they will leave a message and I'll call them back. It seems to be the only recourse.

I have started receiving calls from 468 prefixes with personal names. I pick them up thinking this is someone local. Egads! Its now always a junk call. Thank you for clarifying what is going on. I have a land line and use CenturyLink.
