Lopez Rec Levy on April Ballot

Lopez Rec Levy Update
Resolution 26-01 was approved by the Lopez Rec Commission on February 26. The resolution places a six-year levy, Proposition No. 1, on the April 28 ballot at a rate of $0.23 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

Through an interlocal agreement, levy revenues would support the Lopez Island School District’s sports program and provide community access to school facilities for recreational use. If approved, Proposition No. 1 would allow the School District to include $180,000 in dedicated sports funding in its 2026-2027 budget, helping address the school’s ongoing financial crisis. Without additional revenue, the School District may need to implement further budget reductions in addition to those already in effect.

Additionally, the Lopez Rec levy would provide long-term, stable funding for youth and after-school programs. Current federal grant funding for the Lopez Island Family Resource’s after-school and summer programming is scheduled to expire in 2027. These programs currently serve 159 children in grades K-8. Levy funding would enable Lopez Rec to partner with LIFRC to continue these services.

Proposition No. 1 represents a 38% decrease from the levy amount proposed in the November 2025 general election and is focused on youth programming. For a property in San Juan County assessed at $850,000, the estimated cost would be approximately $16 per month. Revenue generated by the levy would fund youth programs serving Lopez Island.
