Koplan for County Council
Mar 27, 2026
By Renee Koplan
Since moving to Lopez Island in 2014, I have dedicated myself to serving this community in both my professional and volunteer roles. Running for County Council feels like a natural next step, and it would be a true honor to serve in this capacity.
Professionally, many of you may know me through my work as a small business owner operating a local bakery, my time in the Lopez Island School District office, or my role as Superintendent of the Lopez Island Hospital District. During my tenure, we successfully passed a multi-year levy lid lift, which has been critical in supporting the current transition from UW Medicine to a new clinic operator. I am currently part of the clinic team and look forward to building a strong, positive working relationship with Sea Mar as our new employer.

I remain involved with Islands Oil Spill Association, as well as the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, Wolf Hollow Wildlife, and Island Rides. I also continue to serve as an EMT and Wildland Firefighter with Lopez Fire & EMS. In addition, I spent three years as the Lopez Island SHIBA volunteer assisting seniors with Medicare and represented Lopez on the San Juan County Climate and Sustainability Advisory Committee.

I have personally faced many of the pressing issues currently affecting our county and have seen their impact on others. During my early years as a renter, I was grateful to find housing, although it took considerable effort. Now, living with a property owner, I have come to understand the challenges tied to building permits and the consequences of rising assessment values. My interactions with school employees and patients through both EMS and the Clinic highlight our ongoing struggles in securing reasonable health insurance plans at affordable rates.

All these experiences and skills will provide a well-rounded and authentic perspective on the County Council. I kindly ask for your vote in the August primary and November general elections.
