Rate Changes at Lopez Solid Waste

Price increases for disposal in 2026
Beginning January 1, 2026, disposal charges for some miscellaneous items at the Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District site will increase or be newly applied.

These items include tires, small engines, furniture and mattresses, large appliances (excl. refrigerators) and printer/copiers. Current rates on these items have been in place since 2018 and did not reflect current disposal costs.

Additionally, the managing board voted at their December 17th meeting to increase the general garbage rates in 2026. This means the charge for a 32-gallon barrel will go from $10 to $12. Bulk rates will increase as well. The current general rates have been in place since 2021.

The governing board (San Juan County Council) will need to formally approve this decision at their January meeting. If approved, the new rates will take effect February 1, 2026.

Last year the Skagit County Recycling and Transfer Station, which accepts waste from LSWDD as well as the aforementioned large items, instituted annual rate hikes equivalent to 30% over a five-year period. The District is also facing increasing ferry rates, a recently imposed lease payment by the County, and other miscellaneous cost increases. LSWDD also must maintain salaries competitive with businesses on Lopez to retain its excellent staff.

Despite these increases, LSWDD’s disposal rates will still be lower than those on San Juan and Orcas. Recycling will continue to be free. The District will continue to work hard to provide a reasonable balance between the annual levy ask and garbage disposal fees to minimize, as much as possible, the onus on customers and property owners.

And one last, very important point: LSWDD could not keep its costs even at these levels were it not for the incredible support of its dedicated group of volunteers. Their annual hours are equivalent to approximately $100,000 if converted to wages. They deserve our sincere thanks.
