Report - December 10 Town Hall Regarding New Operator for Lopez Island Medical Clinic
LIHD and CWMA co-hosted a Town Hall at Lopez Center, Dec. 10, 5:30-7 pm. The purpose was for the community to hear directly from the two organizations about their ongoing work to secure a new operator for the Lopez Clinic. The meeting was also live-streamed by Zoom Webinar for those who couldn’t attend in person; approximately 70 people attended in person, and there were 71 Webinar participants.

The Town Hall was moderated by part-time Lopez Island resident, Dr. Sandy Melzer, a seasoned health-care executive who now advises hospitals and health systems across the U.S. and internationally. He was joined by Jody Carona from Health Facilities Planning and Development, who has served as a consultant on this effort, along with representatives from CWMA and LIHD. They presented detailed updates on the process to identify a new operating partner, as well as the efforts underway to explore a sustainable model for an independently operated clinic. Slides from the presentation are attached.

A Q&A session followed with responses from the presenters. Questions centered around the kinds of services being sought; differences between models being researched: health care partner, independent clinic, hybrid model; recruitment and retention of staff; maintaining local control; and roles of CWMA and LIHD in operating a Clinic. A report of the Q & A session is attached.

CWMA and LIHD members were pleased with the turnout at the Town Hall; nearly 150 people attended and participated in respectful, interested sharing of information. We’ve received feedback from many in attendance that the Town Hall was informative and they appreciated the format.
