Re-elect Albert Berger to the Hospital District Board
Oct 16, 2025
By Albert Berger
My name is Albert Berger, and I'm asking for your vote to continue serving on the Lopez Island Hospital District Board.
My wife and I have been homeowners here for 30 years, and full-time residents for the past 15. Like you I care deeply about this community and its future.

As we transition to a new clinic operation with the departure of UW Medicine, I believe experience is more important than ever.

For the past eight years, I've served as a commissioner on the Hospital District Board. That experience has given me a clear understanding of the medical challenges and concerns facing Lopez. I've worked directly on negotiating contracts with health care partners, and I've gained valuable experience with San Juan County budgeting and reporting. Before retiring to Lopez, I was a faculty member at the University of Washington where I led multimillio-dollar biomedical research projects. That background prepared me well to ask tough questions and manage complex systems.

As Chair of the District's Finance Committee, I bring a record of sound financial management of your property tax dollars. I've overseen three full Washington State audits of the District, each with no significant negative findings. Under my leadership we established a reserve fund of almost $700,000. to anticipate changes in health care partners. Through sound budgetary efforts of the Finance Committee in 2024 and 2025 we reduced the amount of your Property Tax that could have gone to the District by about $600,000. We've also expanded financial support to vital services, including Physical Therapy, Hamlet House and Dental Care - programs that touch many lives in our community.

Looking ahead, I remain committed to ensuring that quality health care is available to Lopez. I see the departure of UW Medicine after 7 years of operating or clinic as an opportunity to bring additional services to our community. For example, UW Medicine Primary Care does not support urgent or after-hours care in their primary care clinics. As we engage with a new Clinic operator that will be one of the important services I will be looking for.

I am fully dedicated to the future of health care on Lopez. As a retiree I have the time and focus to devote all my efforts to ensure that we deliver health care solutions that are right for our island. My experience, combined with this full commitment, means I can give our community the attention it deserves. If you value thoughtful, undistracted leadership, I ask for your vote so that I can continue to serve you.
