Marine Resource Committee Youth Position - Apply Now
Aug 23, 2025
By San Juan County Marine Resource Committee
The San Juan County MRC has recently added up to two youth positions to join the committee.
Hearing the voices of young people about sustainable resource use and protection for marine species and habitats is a perspective the MRC has been missing. Are you a high school student passionate about marine and nearshore conservation? Do you know a young leader who has an interest in marine science? Learn more about the youth position and how to apply today!

Participation

The youth members will be expected to:
-Attend & participate in monthly meeting. Come prepared to discuss ongoing agenda items for MRC and CAG.
-Read & review minutes from the previous meeting.
-Participate in a project of their choosing. Youth members can join a subcommittee or create a project of their own choosing.

What does the student get out of the experience?

-Learning about marine and nearshore issues across San Juan County and the different associated careers
-Experience serving on a county advisory committee and opportunity to provide a youth---s perspective on local marine and nearshore conservation issues
-Experience being part of a broader network of community-based marine stewardship organizations (NW Straits Initiative)
-Job shadow/informational interviews with co-committee members
-Material for senior project, volunteer/service hours and resume addition
-Opportunities for in-the-field marine conservation experience (e.g., dock talks, derelict vessel monitoring, eelgrass surveys, beach cleanups, etc.)
