As previously announced, the University of Washington (UW) will not renew its contracts with the Lopez Island Hospital District (LIHD) and the Catherine Washburn Medical Association (CWMA) to operate the UW Medicine Lopez Island Clinic.

What Does This Mean?

The UW Medicine Lopez Island Clinic will remain open through June 30, 2026.

LIHD and CWMA are working to secure a new clinic operator to begin immediately after the UW departs.

Lopez Island Physical Therapy runs independently, is not affiliated with the UW Clinic, and is not closing.

Transition Planning
LIHD and CWMA are working with Jody Carona, a consultant specializing in rural health (Health Facilities Planning and Development), who will present a draft transition plan and timeline at a Special Meeting on June 23, 2025, at 6:00 PM.

Clinic Staff Engagement
Meetings with clinic staff have begun to gather input and address concerns. LIHD is adjusting its meeting schedule to support staff participation.

Legislative Engagement
LIHD and CWMA met with U.S. Representative Rick Larsen’s office to discuss how the transition may affect access to care on Lopez Island.
