Need Urgent Community Support: Tell Governor Ferguson to Sign HB2049 and Increase Funding for Lopez School
May 17, 2025
By Lopez Island Education Foundation
The Washington State Legislature has officially passed ESHB 2049, a bill that would allow Lopez Island School District to collect closer to the amount of voter-approved local school levies.
This is an important win for Lopez Schools.

In the last tax assessment, even though Lopez voters approved a levy of $0.79 per $1,000 of assessed property value, the district is only allowed to collect $0.46 due to state-imposed caps. ESHB 2049 would help close this gap.

Now, the final step is Governor Bob Ferguson’s signature.

All community members are encouraged to write to the Governor and ask him to sign ESHB 2049 into law immediately. Doing so will help secure the funding our schools need and affirm the wishes of Lopez voters for a vibrant public school.
