Lopez Island Celebrates Earth Day with a Month of Fun Action and Community Spirit
Apr 1, 2025
By Chom Greacen and Andrew Munson
Lopez Island is going big for the planet this April - transforming Earth Day into a month-long celebration of environmental stewardship, creativity, and connection.
Inspired by the Earth Day Orcas Month, Earth Day Lopez Month 2025 brings together islanders of all ages for a vibrant series of events honoring our shared home and the communities - human and non-human - that call it home.

The festivities kick off with a delicious benefit dinner and art auction on April 1 to support the Gathering of the Eagles Canoe Journey. From there, the month blossoms with something for everyone: a hands-on mending workshop, a night of "adventure" storytelling and the Great Islands Clean-Up to take care of our beloved island.

Visitors can walk the peaceful Whispers of Nature Labyrinth, catch a documentary on national parks, or get crafty in mask- and costume-making workshops for the Procession of the Species, making a welcome return on April 22 after a 6-year hiatus.

Other highlights include a restoration "Work PARTY" at Hummel Lake, a silent sunrise garden meditation and breakfast, a birding and wildflower hike at Iceberg Point, and a community climate conversation to shape our island's future. Adventurous islanders can also hop on a bus to explore public transit options off-island.

Every event reflects the island's deep care for the Earth and one another - combining creativity, reflection, and action. All are welcome to join in the celebration, with most events free or by donation, made possible by participating individuals and organizations including COMPASS (Madrona Institute), Friday Harbor Documentary Film Festival, Friends of Lopez Canoe Landings, Kwiaht, Lopez Island Grange, Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District, Lopez Library, San Juan Makers Guild, and Transition Lopez Island.
