Four districts, six unions, three PTAs, and county leadership all agree: legislators must take action to fully fund education no

San Juan County is uniquely affected by three state funding gaps: Special Education, Materials, Supplies, and Operation Costs (MSOC), and Regionalization.
San Juan County Special Education percentages are some of the highest in the state at 21% (Lopez), 17.2% (Orcas) and 17% (San Juan). All are above the state funding cap of 16%.

Underfunding by the state of MSOC has cost our island districts over $14m over the past five years. Our 12% regionalization rate does not reflect the high cost of living and geographic isolation of our county.

Our unique county is a canary in the coal mine for the catastrophic impacts of Washington State's chronic underfunding of K-12 education. We urge decisive and immediate action to remedy these funding shortfalls to support our students and others like them across the state.

Sincerely,

Brady Smith, Lopez Island School District Superintendent
