Odlin Park Update
May 17, 2026
At the May 12, 10:30 a.m. SJC Council meeting 97 people attended and about 20% voiced their opinions into public record. The testimony was moving and thoughtful.
Synopsis of understanding and next steps:
Council has agreed that the 2026 designated funds to build a new maintenance shed and check-in will stay for now. Around November 1, 2026 Council will revisit this issue.
Brandon Andrews, parks and fair director is now on paternity leave. Around September 1, when he is back to work and after the San Juan County Fair is wrapped up.
Heather Moore and Sandy Bishop have decided to spearhead a volunteer group to continue gathering information. We are self-appointed and not sanctioned by the County but we want to stay in touch with Brandon to pass on findings and concerns when he returns. The Council indicated they may want to appoint a small group later.
Where we stand now and what we plan to explore:
-Committed to no disturbance of the legacy forest area that was initially proposed.
-Strong preference for demolishing the existing 100-year-old house that is in poor condition and re-using that site for the much needed new maintenance shed and check-in.
-To the degree practical, use existing utilities including septic for the new building.
-Locate a new house in what is known as Odlin South. Research possible site and funding - ground truth some of the ideas submitted by Brandon.
- Review roof pitch and propose options
-Do some core samples on some of the Odlin Legacy trees so we can better tell their story.
-Celebrate 100 years of Odlin Park by promoting the need for a 100-year comprehensive plan - or at least a 10-year plan.

We will use the “Let’s Talk” section of Lopez Rocks to communicate. Please check here for updates. Periodically we will call meetings at the Odlin Picnic Shelter or other locations. If you find yourself wanting to spearhead another group with a different emphasis than what is listed above, please do so and we can share our findings with each other.

Remember to continue to send your comments directly to the County if you want them entered into the record. We are an informal group, volunteering our time and will do our best to take in concerns but all final decisions will be made by the County Council. Thank you everyone for turning up and speaking out.
