Vote Yes for Parks and Rec!
Apr 8, 2026
Dear Lopez Island Community,
We are asking for your YES vote on the Lopez Recreation District levy this April 28th.
Last November, Lopez voted to form the Rec District but couldn’t approve the levy rate. The commissioners heard us: they significantly reduced the levy by 38% to a new lower rate of just $.23 cents per $1000 assessed value, while still funding what matters most.
Through smart partnerships with Lopez Island Family Resource Center (LIFRC) and Lopez Island School District (LISD), this leaner levy will deliver crucial funding for:
• School sports and activities for kids K-12
• Reliable, safe after-school care that working families depend on
• Academic enrichment programs for kids K-12
• Affordable summer camps for island kids and working families.
This is a real compromise built on community feedback " and it's a good one.
The urgency is real, and the stakes are high. LISD is facing an ongoing financial crisis caused by state-level decisions that penalize small rural schools, and the school board must make difficult budget decisions this spring about the 2026-2027 school year " including potentially cutting all sports. If the levy doesn't pass, the school cannot commit to the league that organizes our school sports, and no sports next year means declining enrollment, which deepens the financial hole even further, which will result in more cuts to the school overall.
We recognize that these current times are hard for many of us but the ripple effects of inaction " on kids' health, academic performance, and long-term outcomes " would be felt for years to come.
What's at stake goes beyond our kids " it's the future of Lopez Island itself. When families can't access affordable childcare, quality schools, and activities for their children, they leave. And when young families leave, local businesses lose customers, the workforce shrinks, and our year-round community begins to hollow out. This levy is how we prevent that.
This is our moment to act!
This levy requires 60% to pass, so every single vote counts. Here’s what we are asking:
• Vote YES by April 28
• Forward this post and reach out to as many Lopez voters in your circle " neighbors, colleagues, recent grads, fellow community members
• If you know someone who lives away during this time, call or text them " their ballot arrives in April and their vote counts just as much
Together, we can keep Lopez the community we all love. Thank you for investing in Lopez’s future.
With gratitude,
LIPTSA Board
