Religious billboards in Village
Dec 16, 2024
Am I the only one to be, let us say, taken aback (and by that I mean viscerally gut-punched) by the giant cross and deafining billboards proselytizing the Catholic faith that now dominates the south-end entrance to our Village?
If one has to have a permit to install a flag pole on your own land, then surely there must be some kind of permitting process to allow billboards and religious symbols to be placed in such a public area.
Now then, I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings. But mine sure have been. This is an island of many faiths and non-faiths. Plus we don't have billboards of any kind.
Pleae reconsider such a blatant advertisement for your church. It's offensive.

The defining features and symbols of our island are the Trump-supporting flags and signs we are greeted with each time we return to the island. Where is the outrage? That is also private property (as is the land long-owned by the Catholic community), and I want to retch each time I an assaulted upon coming home. Just another look.
Let’s clarify the issue here. Symbols and language are the primary tools of power: It would be one thing to simply display one’s symbols on a humble parcel of private property. However, we are confronted with an historical power titan’s symbolism at the very heart of , and arguably one of the most prominent locations in our community. This is pub ... Read All
How unfortunate to feel victimized by civil rights movements. And a “fringe” one at that.

To answer your question Sarah, one glaring difference is that being black or queer is not an ideology and has not been historically or currently associated with or responsible for any atrocities or grave injustices against other human beings .There are many valid reasons for people to be uncomfortable or worse by these things. On the other hand, people wh ... Read All

You’re not the only one apparently as people are liking your post. It takes a lot of courage to express opinions in this community, and you have every right to share your opinions on a public forum without having to apologize for it. Your points are valid. What concerns me is when people will go out of their way to try and convince you that you shouldn ... Read All
Hello John,
As already stated previously, this land is not public. This is nothing like the school (funded by tax dollars) hosting a religious event. This is the Catholic Church finally using their land for Catholic purposes. I can't argue aesthetics with you as that's for each individual to decide.
Just the facts.

I think the respondents (so far) to Elijah's post have misconstrued his words.
His complaint was not that a Catholic church might be coming soon, but that the, in his words "blatant" (and I agree) signs and giant cross are now at ... Read All

Dear Elija,
Like the others, I am sorry to hear that you were offended by the addition of a cross and two signs (one in English, the other in Spanish) that were simply meant to inform the community as to what was going on with this property that belongs to the Catholic Church, and has been most recognized for the Trail of Tranqui ... Hello Elijah,
Thanks so much for your post. I think there is some confusion as the Catholic Diocese of Seattle owns this property and has for over 50 years. As the Catholic Community on Lopez has continued to grow over the last 10 years, we are looking into the feasibility of utilizing the land for r ... Read All
