The Ferry - Again.............
Sep 29, 2021
Lopez now does not even have the 10.40am ferry to rely on. That boat will come from Friday Harbour and we have 30 or 40 spaces allocated. There is not a single boat on which we can reliably assume there will be available space, other than the 1.35pm which is too late in the day to allow us to accomplish much on the mainland

Every time I think it cannot get worse it does.

Lopez has a population of approximately 2800 (1400 households) - not, presumably, taking into account tourists, visitors and vacation home owners. We have - apparently depending on the whims of the ferry service - between 105 and 135 allocated spaces in the mornings, which is when almost all of us need to travel to the mainland. Additionally, in the mornings one will usually see several large commercial vehicles, some of which can take up to three or four cars spaces. So how many spaces are there actually available to residents needing to reach the mainland?

It's turning into the roach motel - we can check in, but we can't check out. I hear they are planning a movie: "Escape from Lopez"

Local island resilience/reduced dependence is important, agreed Nathan. We could use a vet, optometrist, another dentist, more mechanics, better medical services, etc. But especially for time-critical ferry transportation (f.ex. appointments that take 2 or 3 months to get, a flight/train, …) residents should either be able to make a reservation or have pri ... While I understand and support the responses of being more self sufficient, looking at the new building going on here (which I, of course, agree has been needed)... could we please speak to potential water needs? Water could be the highest priority at some point for critical short term needs. On ferry ... Read All

Sounds like we should work to become less dependent on the mainland then. The ferries have never been reliable.
Making sure we have solid medical services and local food production would be a good start.
It's been clear the ferry system cares more about tourism than the practicalities of island ... Read All

I think everyone writing a letter is really important, does anyone know who we should send it to? Unfortunately we need to be squeaky wheels here.

Everyone should write our state legislatures and the governor complaining and asking to have the person in charge of the ferry system be replaced. Our rates keep going up and our service keeps getting worse. Did you know that the Whidbey Island ferry runs about every half hour and the summer rate is $12 with no additional costs for other passengers? I think ... Read All
