Jul 10, 2024
1:30 - 3:00pm
Lopez Library Community Room
Dr. Fred Rhoades will provide a naturalist presentation on “Lichens of South Lopez Island” on July 10th, at 1:30 in the Lopez Library Community Room. Please join us to learn more about their unique biodiversity and the role lichens play in our island ecosystem on Lopez.

Dr Rhoades is a retired professor of Biology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon and later was a professor at WWU. Dr. Rhoades has done research on lichens and fungi and published the comprehensive survey of the lichens on Lopez Island at Point Colville and Iceberg in 1998 where he identified over 200 species.

Lichens provide a uniquely beautiful and colorful biodiversity to our island. They thrive in the marine wet/dry conditions and can be seen on rocky outcroppings, mossy mounds, and trees. Come learn about these symbiotic life forms that we share our island with to better appreciate the unique biodiversity of our landscape.

Presentation will be from 1:30 - 3:00.
