Classic Jazz and the Great American Songbook
This Week: We begin with our vocal playoff between the two great alpha-male baritones born on 12-12, white vs. black but best of friends, Frank Sinatra (born December 12, 1915) and Joe Williams (12-12-1918), along with two other male singers born 12-12, and then the most popular female hit-maker of the late 1950s, Connie Francis. Other birthday artists honored this hour include Japanese pianist and band-leader Toshiko Akiyoshi, burning 95 this week. The second hour features the best songs written by two British composers born a date apart in mid-December, Noel Coward (born December 16, 1899) and named after the Christmas season (Noel), and then Ray Noble (born December 17, 1903). We close with three more Stan Getz albums from the host’s climate-controlled crypt box of “G” artists in 12-inch LPs, namely “The Marrakesh Express” (1969) with orchestra, “Communications’72 (1971) with organ, vocals and orchestra, and “Poetry” (1983) in duet with pianist Albert Dailey.
