This Week: We offer a third serving of Dmitri Shostakovich, born just a decade before the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 and serving the rest of his life under the thumb of Stalin and other censors. In this hour, he celebrates the Death of Stalin in 1953 with his 10th Symphony (thereby escaping the "curse of the 9th") and then providing the perfect critique of the Soviet controlled economy with his 1955 operetta, "Cheryomushki" ??" named after a cramped housing high-rise in Moscow). His music becomes almost giddy as the Soviet censors start to lighten up on his creative output.
