Classic Jazz and the Great American Songbook.
This Week: As befits the end of a quarter, we will wrap up some loose ends with the conclusion of our centennial tributes to Thad Jones and Ike Isaacs (both born March 28, 1923), while adding two other jazz artists born just a day or two after them. We’ll also play selections by 8 to 10 jazz artists that we lost in the first quarter of 2023, with the only consolation being that they nearly all lived past 80 years of age, better than the norm of the 1930s to 1960s, when so many died at about half that age from drugs, alcohol, or disease. April begins some new series, including the Songbirds of Spring, in which we discover that more than most of the leading female jazz and pop vocalists were born in the first month of spring. We know them all by their first names alone. We’ll lead off with those born March 22-31: Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Bailey, Astrud Gilberto, Norah Jones…and introducing Stacey Kent. We’ll also start a series of selections from the exciting Gordon Goodwin “Big Phat Band,” which got its start delighting kids in Disneyland.
