Lopez Solid Waste (LSWDD) Seeks New Board Members
August 18, 2026
What’s next for The Dump?
That's up to us!
Lopez Solid Waste exists because Lopez residents want it to. One weekend doesn’t go by without stories and sentiments shared about Lopez Solid Waste's importance ??" as an essential utility and as a place for essential human connection. Year after year, Lopez voters choose Lopez Solid Waste by renewing our annual levy, which tells us that our current structure, services, and programs are still important to you.
LSWDD is a junior taxing district, responsible first and foremost to Lopez Island. Our District is governed by members of the San Juan County Council, and managed by Lopez residents ??" our managing board is comprised of folks who have their primary residence here on Lopez. This operating and governance structure represents, we’d argue, the best of Lopez ??" stewarded by all, used by all. And these community benefits require community participation; Lopez needs to keep choosing the Dump, and keep shaping it to meet our current needs.
Our board members attend one public meeting each month to help move the dump forward. That’s (really) it. Because we’re not a non-profit, we don’t engage in any fundraising.
Of course, board members are also encouraged to engage beyond monthly meetings, whether that's offering industry expertise, researching grants, connecting with the community, developing our recycling programs alongside our operations team, or other activities that make our District more resilient and help meet our community's growing needs. We want you to join the board because you want to be part of the Dump's present and future.
If you're interested, please reach out to sarahr@lopezsolidwaste.org, or connect directly with our board chair, Pam Stewart, at pams@lopezsolidwaste.org. We'll let you know the next steps for applying.
Thank you for loving the Dump!
