Resolution No. 25/26-6 will be on the August 4th ballot. It is a replacement levy for education and operation programs for our school. And it is very important that it passes.

I have a request: Could the Rec District supporters cease writing hateful notes to community members who spoke out against funding the Rec? I’m finding that too many people are associating the Rec with the school and I am worried that it will have a negative effect on this very important upcoming replacement levy.

This morning I stopped by Lopez Village Market and looked at the hanging photographs of the school graduates. There they were; bright and beautiful and setting off on the next chapter. I wonder how they feel listening to this conversation? People tossing around words like shameful, stupid, uniformed - just because someone has a different philosophy.

I know a few teachers and others who work at the school. They are dedicated and smart. The way some people talk about the school, you’d think that the only thing our small rural school has going for it is organized sports. Speaking of which, I heard that Lopez Island Education Foundation(LIEF) has raised just under $200,000 since the failure of the Rec levy. Not sure if this is true, but I have talked to quite a few people who have already donated.

Lopezians care about each other and especially youth.

Lopez has more than a decent school. Let’s all figure this out and stop with the hate talk.
