Fall Ferry Quota: Fun w/ #s
Sep 25, 2022
Lopez was allocated 80 spaces to Anacortes before the 1:35 Lopez-only sailing, for a total of 2400 spaces/mo (assumption: other islands use all “their” spaces).

Let’s say everybody (residents, vacation home owners, and commercial traffic) wants to leave Lopez in the AM for the usual reasons. And just for fun, let's work with the new 135 Lopez Vacation Rental (VR) permit cap (even though they're not all operating yet).

If a VR uses 2.5 trips/wk on average, that results in 1350 trips/month for 135 VRs. If all the VR folks wanted to leave in the morning too, that would leave 1050 morning trips for the 2611 resident and vacation households plus commercial. That’s 1 morning trip every 2.5 months. Less with canceled sailings.

If all the VR folks left in the afternoon, that would mean 1 morning trip every 4 to 5 weeks for everyone else.

The Lopez VR cap was arbitrarily raised by 40 VRs, overriding the Planning Commission’s recommendation. That amounts to 15% of morning spaces in the fall - further congesting capacity that didn’t exist to begin with.

Over 80% of VR owners do not live in SJC. Their business activity here has the following impact (80% of 135 VRs = 108 VRs): 1080 ferry trips per month, or 45% of the fall schedule morning trips. Assuming one car, not two or three for a larger party or RVs.

I would love to see a travel tip on their business ads and VR entry doors: “we HIGHLY recommend leaving Lopez in the afternoon due to ferry service capacity issues”.

The ferry service is, if not broken, in need of serious upgrades. The fall ferry schedule is apparently about the same as past years, but the lines are so much longer! Guess the new folks need regular fixes of mainland activities?

interesting math to be sure. Having experience with this, I say, take the evening ferry for next day activities. Although the fall schedule is not that great for the pm sailing either. And you need somewhere to stay once you get to Anacortes. I've given up on early morning sailings, lacking the stamina to get up at 4 am and then have an awesome and prod ... Read All
