The Ferry Service..... As Always.....
Mar 23, 2022
So on a rainy, miserable Wednesday in March I went for the 12.55pm ferry to Anacortes and it was full.

We ain't into the tourist season yet but this boat was full and a lot of people were left behind - I would guess 15 or 20 vehicles - although I did not bother to count them.

My husband is hospitalized on the mainland and will be there for at least another three weeks. He is the patient, not me, so I am not entitled to a PLO. I am spending an atrocious amount of time waiting in line at the ferry when I have a lot of other things to deal with. Lopez is never going to have a reservations system and now we no longer even have a reliable quota. The reason for the removal of the quota is that the allocated spaces were not always available and people were upset about it. Well, if they were allocated to Lopez why were they not available? This is just another underhanded means of reducing Lopez'quota.

More and more people are moving to the islands, and restrictions on foreign travel have meant more and more tourists, but we have fewer boats than heretofore. Wondering if one will or will not get on the boat after sitting in line interminably is nerve wracking. Living with the ferry has become a massive stress factor for anyone who needs to go to the mainland.

The ferry service, or lack thereof, is making life in the islands untenable and Lopez seems always to be the island which bears the brunt of this endless mess.

WE NEED TO HAVE RESERVATIONS AVAILABLE FOR LOPEZ, AND WE NEED TO KNOW HOW MANY SPACES WE ARE ALLOCATED, AND THOSE SPACES SHOULD BE OURS WITH NO IFS, ANDS OR BUTS.

Thanks Shelley. That all makes sense! Pretty much the same as always... Something to put up with for the joys of living on Lopez

We still have quotas on Eastbound sailings off Lopez. Recently the Yakima was replaced by the Sealth, a smaller vessel that is on the 12:55 run. The 10:20 is the Samish, and we have barely filled it halfway. If you don't want to have to wait in line you can catch the 10:20 when arriving at the last minute.

What about advance reservations for islanders? Otherwise we’d be in the same situation as SJislanders and Orcasonians, competing for reservations at 7AM (and too bad if you’re ten minutes late to the refresh button lottery). I wouldn’t want reservations without an early reservation period for isla ... Read All

Now the reservation system for getting off of Lopez is limited to Business Account Holders with trucks, and there is a cretin number of feet where the large trucks compete for the space. If we had a reservation system off of Lopez then you would be directly competing with more large trucks, those kayak vans with trailers, bicycle tour vans with trailers, va ... Read All

I always complain about no reservation option for leaving Lopez when answering the latest FROG survey. To little effect obviously so far. But it wouldn't hurt to have more complain as there is going to be a new FROG survey in early April where you can rate WSF performance for January through March 2022. Below is the link to join FROG (Ferry Riders Op ... Read All

Hazel,
You are absolutely right we need a reservation system on Lopez...what is happening now does not work...so much time is wasted on line at our ferry dock.

To paraphrase an old phone company slogan from the 60's and 70's, "We don't care. We don't have to!"

Now that the governor's dad doesn't live here any more, we are screwed.

Maybe the ferry service needs to hire us to do the advertising for them. We could tell the tourists what they're getting into before it's too late. Here's a few new tag lines for WSF to post as we go into the stupid season:
