Not the time for tourism -- is the County doing anything? (Other)

Hey everyone. I have been noticing a lot of unfamiliar faces around town and have been hearing some disturbing reports from local businesses of out of towners overwhelming and acting irresponsible at their businesses.

We clearly do not have the medical infrastructure here on Lopez (or anywhere on the islands) to handle a rash of serious covid-19 cases and these additional visitors are putting all of us (and themselves) at risk.

Does anyone know if the county council has been discussing this at all? Is there any plan of action?

It seems to me that it would be a good idea to put a temporary halt to air bnb/vrbo rentals Warrington, OR has just ordered all tourists out and Astoria, OR is poised to do the same.

Anyone out there have any (calm, constructive) thoughts?

A possible solution to the problem of non residents coming to the islands is to screen them at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. If their ID doesn't show a San Juan County residence they don't get on the ferry. Simple and effective.

There was an interesting story in the WSJ yesterday about AirBnB losing lots of money due to this virus:

Getting ahead of the curve means slowing this first wave of infections. Restrict now for 3-4 weeks until at least King County peaks, and reassess then after other counties peak also.

Below is King County REPORTED counts (source WA DOH).

We don't want to live in a police state, and we can hardly meet folks coming off the ferry with a shotgun, but certainly tourists should not be made welcome at this time, and that should be made very clear on any site offering information about.... Read all
