Does any Lopezian know the history of The Fisherman Bay Spit Preserve. I'm particularly interested in the stone hearth that is there and what it's purpose might have been. It looks to me like it was an outdoor gathering place or outdoor kitchen. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Sam B

Hi Lyn,
It was where the dock is now, on the channel going out of the bay.

I too would be interested in seeing a picture of the old Homestead if one exists. My grandfather owned the property that is now weeks point. I don’t remember ever seeing a dock actually out on the point itself. Mary Reece, do you know where the dock was.... Read all

Thank you, Ruby.
Yes, Melba is my second cousin. Her grandparents (my great granparents)homesteaded the place Howard Cole bought (now Buffum’s) in 1891. Her dad was Julius’ brother.

Thanks, Tracy.
I am on the Board at the Lopez Island Historical Society, and have shared this now.
I will continue to research the history! Maybe the Richeys have a photo somewhere.

it would be really important for this history and the history of the preserve even before this sad chapter to be written and placed in the museum and a sign out on the preserve with some of it's history. thank you, Sam, for asking about this. .... Read all

On the 1933 Metsker Map of Lopez, it shows the Fisherman Bay Spit Preserve was owned by John S Henry. He and his wife lived in a large house on that property.
Henry sold to Fremont Aldrich and moved to Friday Harbor. The 1949 Metsker Map shows Aldrich.... Read all

Can anyone confirm wether that is an English or American Chestnut?

I've noticed that there is a real Chestnut there. The one with the "conkers"...the kind you can roast and eat. So many of the real chestnuts died in the Chestnut blight, that I don't think there are many in the US anymore.

There was a house there. The Richey lived there with his wife Francis in the 60's and seventies. He was a collector of cars, trucks and many other things including Shetland ponies who roamed there and on the spit.I remember a teacher living there.... Read all
