History of Trains?
Mar 1, 2021
Have there ever been any trains on Lopez? Not like Burlington Northern but small utility tracks for moving logs or goods in and out of a dock area? My father past away and he had said that he found history of such somewhere. But I've never found any info. I asked the museum to research and they didn't find anything either. My dad was usually right about most things so I'm not quick to discount this story! Thank you.

Thanks Chris. Any hints on where to look when I'm paddling around? I wonder if there are any photos of this? (I love history research!)

Mud Bay once had a boatbuilding yard and pier. Evidence of railway is still there if you know where to look.

A guy named Ken Lloyd who lived on Lloyd's Lane built trains. He took them to the San Juan County Fair and people could ride on them. Also at the Fish Camp in MacKaye Harbor they had a system of rails to pull the fishing boats out for repair and winter.

I wonder if it was something they may have used at Mackaye Harbor to pull up the logs from the fish traps. That’s the only thing I can think of.
