Taproot, Lopez Community Kitchen
Jan 2, 2021
Provides shared equipment and facilities to create value added food products to support small family businesses and help nourish the community.
The purpose of Taproot is to provide a certified commercial kitchen and food processing facility on Lopez Island on a nonprofit-basis.

Our goal is to promote and support local entrepreneurship while fostering connections between food, land stewardship, and the health and economic well-being of our community. This kitchen is another step in our community's journey towards a greater food security.

It is vitally important that local producers have a place to make their products, and that the cost of that facility is shared by many hands. This kitchen will benefit all of us, by enabling small businesses to expand, innovate, and flourish.

Another important function is to provide processing infrastructure for organzations, such as the Lopez Locavores, to process local fruits and vegetables in order to provide nourishment to the community through the food bank and other organizations.

The kitchen is also available for home processors to use commercial grade equipment for their own food. (Think of coring, slicing and drying 75 pounds of fruit overnight.)

We hope to help people create healthy, locally made products that will eventually become an integral part of the food-web of the San Juans Islands.

Our business plan calls for the ongoing operating costs to be covered by user fees. However, we rely on community support for infrastructure improvements. If you believe in the importance of local food security infrastructure then you can securely donate by check or PayPal at lopeztaproot.org/donate/.
